has anyone ever heard of balanceing the rim to find the heavyest side of the rimm before putting on the tire and then putting the heavyest part of the tire opposite the heavy side of the rim so you add as little wheel wieght to the wheel as possable. I have a friend who road races and he mounts and balances his own tires and does this. says it makes a difference to him.

rq521b,

The valve stem location is usually the heaviest part of the wheel and most tires have a dot (the light side of tire) that you line up with the valve stem.

As long as the tire is balanced your good but less weights look better.

I really wouldn't think that would be necessary. Once you add the tire you'll have to still balance the whole thing anyway. You may end up just adding more weights than you normally would. My Michelin PP3's I just installed does not appear to have a light side marking or dot for some reason.  If I ever feel like I have to use too many weights then I'll mark it and break the bead to re-position the tire and start over. Sometimes the valve stem area is actually the lighter part of the rim/tire combo.
