In the Jan 06 Super Streetbike Article, Lee Shierts performed an Exhaust System Shootout on the GSX-R1000.

Lee's Performance GSX-R1000 Exhaust Test

First of all, Brocks Performance would like to thank Don Smith, Steve Earwood of Rockingham Dragway, Lee Shierts and all of the guys at Lees Performance for taking on such a HUGE endeavor. The Dyno testing is difficult enough, but to test each system PROPERLY at the drag strip under the same conditions is extremely taxing, especially considering natural time constraints such as wind, weather, and darkness. WELL DONE ALL!

That being said, we were a bit disappointed at the format used in the magazine. Such a knowledge-filled data base could/should have taken many pages to explain, but a two-page format was specified. All involved with the test did the best they could, but inevitably some data was lost before the magazine hit the shelves. We will admit that there are two sides to every story, but we feel inclined to supply our position on the tests from a Brocks Performance point of view.

We were initially contacted by Lee Shierts to supply an exhaust system for testing. My first question was, EXACTLY how do you intend to test? Dyno? Drag Strip? Or both? I was very concerned about the drag strip portion because we had just completed rigorous and thorough testing of our own with our AMA/Prostar Supersport team/bikes to determine which configuration we would run on our race bikes. To our surprise, the system we chose to run on our race bikes actually made 2-3 horsepower LESS on the dyno than our Big Tube dyno-developed system. Here lies the dilemma: Run the risk of losing the dyno test to prove real world performance, or send a system to win the dyno test that we would not run ourselves at the track. We ONLY sell what we race ourselves, and I trusted Lees testing ability. So the Generation 3 Track-Developed system was the one we sent to have tested in Lees exhaust shootout.

FYI: The front section of the Generation 3 and Street Megaphone systems are exactly the same; I sent both rear configurations to demonstrate our flexibility.

This is why we had two systems in the test--in reality it was one system and two different mufflers/mid-pipes. One more thing of note, the Big Tube dyno-developed system works better on highly modified big-bore engines and is available by special order. Contact
sales@brockracing.com for details.

I personally had no contact with Lee or Don during the testing process. I did, however, speak to Lee after the tests were complete and wrote down all of the areas in which our systems performed well. After the Dyno testing was finished, Lee phoned to say that we were a VERY close second behind the Ti-Force in horsepower. (Very close meant a little over 1/10th of a HP peak, .14 HP to be exact, or .035 HP per cylinder--that IS very close.)

My sales manager, Bryan, started to convulse--speaking in tongues?! I TOLD YOU we should have sent the Big Tube! Some guys will purchase the Ti because of that little horsepower advantage, and WE could have won by at least a couple of ponies with the Big Tube!

I even began to doubt my decision. Now I REALLY was hoping that Lee would cover all of his bases on the drag strip. I asked Bryan to relax because I was SURE Lee would see the same results at the strip that we saw ourselves. I dont care how much power the Dyno reads; the Generation 3 will prove itself at the strip with quicker acceleration and more MPH, I remember stating. Besides, our integrity is worth more than winning Lees pipe shootout! (Try telling this to your companys sales manager)

Lee called after the drag strip testing with good news. You guys did very well, he said. In fact, one of the better passes we kept put you in different time zones than all of the other pipes.Hold-on--WE KEPT?! I asked in a VERY puzzled tone. Yeah, said Lee. I had a couple of really good launches with your system, like a 1.55 on one pass, and a tail wind began to blow on at least one pass. We had to throw some of your runs out because they were so much better than the other pipes that it made the tests look rigged. I wanted to keep 60 foots in the same area of one another so a good launch from me didnt affect the overall results, he said. Did ANY of the other systems have passes thrown out? I asked. No, just you, I think, said Lee. Whatever...its fine with me as long as we won the drag-strip portion, I pronounced. You didPlus you guys had the only 330 in the 4.0s, the only 1/8 mile ET in the 6.0s, the only 1/8 mile MPH in the 124s, the only 1/8 mile ET in the 9.20s, the only 1/8mile MPH over 152 and the quickest back half ET, said Lee. SWEET--Which system did what? I asked. They were both about the same, and honestly I cant remember after so many passes, but we made notes on the tickets, Lee said.

I couldnt wait for the magazine to come out. But, when it did, I realized in a hurry that all of the areas we won WERE NOT LISTED due to the two-page format. Not only was this information missing, but the ETs listed were not nearly as good as we had spoken about on the phone. I wrote down that Lees best pass was a 9.24 with a 1.57 60ft. So where did this 9.29 come from?

Here is a ticket Lee faxed to me:

The note on the ticket says there was a tail wind which negated the pass, but the MPH on the Gen 3 pass listed in the article was FASTER? I dont remember the last time a tail wind helped my ET on the front half of the track, but I sure do remember more MPH!

The drag strip testing results (in the two page format) does show that we won the _ mile E.T. and MPH on the track - however, not by much (but I guess it doesnt take much in drag racing to win). Of course we were happy with the results, nonetheless. Below are the other areas we were proud of that did not make the article:

To summarize, we also won
1. Quickest 60 ft- 1.572 (per Lee 9.245 thrown out ticket- Street Meg)
2. Quickest 330 ft- 4.078 (per Lee 9.24 thrown out ticket- Street Meg)
3. Quickest 1/8 mile ET  6.063 (per Lee 9.24 thrown out ticket- Street Meg)
4. Highest 1/8 mile MPH  125.01 MPH (Gen 3 9.30/ 152.3 MPH)
5. Quickest _ Mile ET- 9.245 (per Lee 9.245 thrown out ticket- Street Meg)
6. Highest _ mile MPH 152.3 MPH (Gen 3 9.30/ 152.3 MPH)
7. Quickest back-half ET 3.182 (per Lee 9.245 thrown out ticket- Street Meg)
Note: back-half ET is the time between the 1/8 and _ ET cones. It is very important to racers as it measures the acceleration of the bike to test performance which is not based as much on the rider as the front half track measurements.
8. Lightest System: Street Megaphone without the baffle- 8 lbs, 5 oz

One advantage to the Street Megaphone system is a removable baffle for track use only. Our Billet Aluminum/Stainless Steel Baffle with dual stage packing weighs 2 lbs. less. We think this is fair to note.

One last item I have been asked numerous times why there is a photo of Lee running a Ti-Force exhaust in the article. Seems like they would have a shot of one of Brocks systems since we did so well? The answer is a bit odd. The temperature during the test was approaching 100 degrees. Since it was a closed/private session and Lee is a professional rider, he decided to perform the tests in jeans and a leather jacket. This also helped because there was so much work that needed to be done, stepping in and out of his leathers would have hampered progress. The shot in the article was the ONLY shot they had of Lee in his leathers?!

After the testing was complete, Lee began to race his bike on the AMA/Prostar National Circuit. Below is a photo of how Lee himself decided to outfit his bike, exhaust wise (Generation 3 with Titanium Oval Muffler).

FYI: Lee purchased this system it was NOT a freebie for the tests!

Anyone who knows Lee will tell you he LOVES to WIN. We are very proud to produce his system of choice.

Just thought you might like to know the Brocks Performance side of the story!

Good Luck and GO FAST !

Brock

thank you for your time and effort to do such a complete and fair test on a subject that gets asked about on a daily basis. i have a qustion about the test.. you used several top systems , but did not use any from yosh or akrapovic? was this just due to cost or the many differnt systems available from them ? it seemed odd that yosh is probally the most assosiated with the gsxr and it wasnt tested. do you have any test info available with these systems? i am currently trying to decide on a full system for my 06 1k and was glad to see yuor test due to a few of the pipes im looking into you tested ( decideing between the street megaphone /  streetsmart  , micron serpent with the 300mm ultra can , akro evo 2 system, yosh ti trs ).

also do you have any dyno charts from the tests that show the whole curves not just peak numbers? im looking more for a pipe that has the best gain under the curve ( more important the a peak hp gain esp proven in your test that all were within 2 hp peak of each other).

again thank you for your time and efforts it is greatly appreciated!
