    Posted: April/05/2004 at 7:03pm

Rode my busa around the driveway the other day without a helmet. Heard a bad exhaust leak. Finally got time to take off the plastics today to find/fix the leak and found that it was coming from the seam between the titanium can sleeve and the can end cap on the mid pipe end. I can feel exhaust blowin' out of the seam pretty hard (pretty bad leak) and it sounds like a Ford Pinto on steroids with a bad muffler. That's the first time I've had 'er runnin' without a lid on since the GEN III install. In addition to hearing the leak, it sounds like there's also a rattle inside the can somwehere, like there's some sort of metal to metal vibration goin' on.

The leak is comin' from the area of the overlap in the Ti sleeve shown in this pic. The pic shows the area directly below the spring hook loops on the can end cap. How do I go about gettin' this fixed? I've e-mailed my dealer, Tom @ www.veltune.com but thought I'd post directly to your forum as well so maybe I can get a speedy resolution to my problem.

Thanks Brock! Called Brian this AM and got the replacement on the way. It always sucks to have a problem but dealing with folks like you, Brian, and Tom at Veltune certainly makes it suck less. Every company and product will have an occasional problem. It's how problems are handled that lets one know who they are dealing with. So far I'm happy with how this has been handled. As long as that can gets here on Friday and I get to ride as planned this weekend it's all good.

Oh, and I wear either a 2X or 3X in t-shirts. Preferably 3x when available.

Thanks for the reply and for takin' care of me. I really didn't have any doubts though. Dealin' with you and Tom I was certain things would work out to the good.

crazytrainbusa: I was confident that you would find timely satisfaction.

That is one of several reasons why I handle BDE exhausts... exclusively!

Later,

Tom

Got the replacement can installed this weekend. Problem solved. No leak and the rattle sound that I mentioned in my original post here is gone. I wonder if it isn't a problem with the packing in the original can. Anyway, just updating this thread to let Brock & Brian know that the replacement can resolved my problem. It's hard to explain the difference but there is actually an audible difference between the original can and the replacement. The replacement has a cleaner and maybe a little deeper tone.

Thanks again for the quick and painless handling of my problem. First class service guys!

Yeah, even the new can has an ever so slight amount of blow-by in the same area but less than the original can. Also, no rattle/vibration noise. I think a little blow-by from the seam is totally acceptable given the nature of the seam on cans made this way as long as it doesn't have the strange noise to go along with it. I wouldn't have complained if not for the sound.

I wish I could explain the sound it was making. It was like a rattle that almost made the exhaust note sound like the muffler tip was under water. I know you've all heard a small 4 cylinder car with a bad muffler that just sits there burbling. That's kinda what it sounded like. Wait, I've got it. Put a piece of paper flat against the exhaust tip on a car and that's what it sounded like, only not as loud/pronounced. Like that, only muted like this was bein' done inside the can instead of externally at the tip. That make sense? Don't know why that analogy didn't come to me sooner because it is very fitting to what I was hearing.

Since the new one has a little blow-by in the seam but doesn't make the odd noise I'm wonderin' if it wasn't just a problem with the packing or something. If it weren't for the fact that I had less than 400 miles on the can I'd prolly figure it just needed repackin'. The new one has a clean, deep thump. No burbling sound... just the sweet, sweet music that only the beloved Busa, Brock, Hindle trio can produce!!! No other system I've heard sounds quite as sweet to me.

I'm shippin' the original can out to Brock tomorrow. Maybe he can check the guts and figure out what went wrong. To have only two real problems with his pipes out of all the systems he's sold I think he has an excellent track record! And again, an occasional defective product isn't so bad when you're dealing with a company that actually cares about the customer. I know I won't hesitate when it comes to buying from Brock again. I hope to get one of his big bore kits. Hopefully that will be my winter project this year.
