Topic: My own ZX14 Diary (issues, solutions,more issues)Posted: August/02/2019 at 1:25am |

Hi All
Please feel free to agree, disagree, or advise on the below. January 2019: I
started my journey, aiming to get my 2007 ZX14 to run in the 8’s…even 8.99 will
make me the happiest bloke on a ZX14. Simply because I never saw a ZX14 run the
8’s in my part of the world (RSA)…best I saw was a ZX14R doing a 9.0 flat here. Agree or disagree?
- My initial assumption…in general maybe the ZX14 is not the best choice for a
quarter mile bike anyway because it’s bulky and heavy. I proceeded with many weeks of informal racing to get seat
time and more comfy with it. Lessons
learned during this time – the fuel pump/filter needs to be cleaned/back
flushed regularly. Flow on these buggers go downhill quick and often…at some
point bike felt like a 600cc. February 2019:
ECU flashed (factory restriction removed and more RPM range), PCV added,
secondary flies removed. Only 168 HP and 136KW torque on the dyno. I
expected more, but that is a dyno thing ... March 2019: Add
Swingarm extensions, Brock’s lowering links and front straps. No traction.
Traction better with SC1 tyre but still bad. More preload and shock compression
with slow rebound, no luck. Sticking with the preload setting and play around
with shock…no good. Solution for me
was less preload for more sag, and more shock…doing this seems to allow more
use/range of shock travel. Lesson
learned, don’t try to let the spring do the shock’s work. From stock to
16/42 gearing. Swingarm extensions dropped a fair amount of HP on the dino. Best
Quarter mile times = 10.4 April /May 2019:
Head C&C gasflowed, degree cam gears, carpenter valve springs. Clutch
spacers. 172HP and 135KW on the dino. Best quarter mile = 10.1. Why not better. Spoke to Brock via
email and got smacked on the fingers because I run crap exhaust. Order Brock’s
Alien head and 45T Vortex sprocket. Air filter mod done (think called the Shane
mod?) June 2019:
Brock’s Alien head arrived and fitted. Look and sound GREAT! Gearing now 16/45,
and Shinko hookup. Set AFR perfectly on dyno but 11HP down due to the
Shinko. Only one run at track before we packed up due to someone’s oil spill,
but still a 10.1…will check next time. Question to self: How will the lower HP readings from the Extended swing arm and Shinko affect ET's, or is it just that these things confuse the Dyno in too many ways. July 2019: Dynojet
quick shifter fitted. Dropped front (at forks) and rear lowering links a fair amount.
10.6 quarter mile at truck…even with quickshifter, what the hell! Keep trying
but no joy. Adjusted rear lowering links to raise the back up a bit again, next
run 9.95 and then 9.94. In the 9’s and so happy! Lesson learned, agree or disagree….there is a limit to lowering the
rear, you CAN go too much. Mission now…drop another 0.95 – 1.0 seconds to fall into the
high 8’s. How? What to do, what to do…can I hit 8’s consistently within 4
Months or is the ZX14 indeed not the quarter mile machine everyone initially
thought..time will tell... |

Monday 05/08/19 - Picked up my DNA race air filter to replace the stock 'Shane mod' filter. DNA claims a 51% increased airflow vs stock at 182,2 CFM

We would disagree, the ZX-14 is a great bike for drag racing. Diary 1(our 06 ZX-14) Went 8.99 stock motor, stock wheelbase. There are a million things that can factor into the equation when trying to get ETs down. Right now, I would venture to say that traction is one of your biggest problems right now. Any time that you extend the swingarm you are going to have traction issues. The stock shock is not made for it and doesn't have the adjustments necessary to get traction with an extended arm. Especially if the track your on isn't prepped the best. Next step that I would take is getting a dragshock, something that can help you get your power to the ground. And then follow what Brock did with Diary 1 to a T. And just keep practicing and see where that gets you. Lower is better also, you don't want to be so low that your tire is rubbing your undertail or anything like that but low is good, front of the bike and the rear, and make sure that you have the front end strapped down when going down the track as well. I hope this helps get you going in the right direction.

Hi Steve, thanks for the input. I value any and all recommendations and advice i can get to help me reach my 8's goal. I do agree with your suggestion on the drag shock. I already browsed Brock's drag shock options and that is a definite on my list of must have's. My aim is to have it fitted by the next race season. Also thinking to chance to a APE clutch plate kit or similar once my current clutch retire.
I am also just running normal 95 pump gas. The fuel options around here is limited to Accelerate 102, 24/7 Race fuel 102 and/or 109 octane, and BP 98 race fuel...MR12 only by order and very pricey. At this stage I do not consider testing any of these fuels. I previously tested NF Concentrate and the bike ran crap. Our next race is end next month (Sept)...will post my most consistent 60ft and 1/4 mile times i get, maybe I/we can read more into where what is happening or not happening at what stages of the track

Some setbacks - snapped my EK Race chain yesterday. Pulled in 1st gear, kicked 2nd...and nothing
. Was relieved to see it was only the chain...and lucky that I didn't damage the engine casings.Next disappointment - finally downloaded the PCV software to upload the brocks map for my Alien head...notice I received the wrong map. My zx14 is the 2007, I received the map for a 2017 zx14R. I emailed map support and waiting to hear from them. Pulled my current map and forwarded it to map support also...maybe they can compare and advise. At practice the guys recorded (no to tickets ) a 60ft time in the 1.40's which I think is not too bad, but with that I expected better 1/4 mile ET's than 9.9. Thus seems like my issues is further down the track.

Frederick, I just wanted to check in and make sure that you got the correct mapping. With a 60' time in the 1.40s you should be running faster than 9.90s. Also, you said "the guys recorded" can you also post the recording of your pass? We can take a look and see if we can tell anything.

In my mind i see me going back to stock settings on cam gear degrees after that

so...feedback from Saturday.
Runs was on a unprepped track (no trackbite etc)...with full kit I weighed in at 220lbs. 60fts for the day was from 1,6 to 1,8 (all bikes) due to no trackbite. I did the best 60ft at 1.6. My best time for the day was a 9,816 with a 144mph trap speed...60ft here was 1,74 My gearing was 16/45 |

Frederick, Thanks for the update, it is hard to lay down any great times on an unprepped track. I would say that you did pretty good all things considered.

I am glad to say it seems I got my traction problems sorted. Did 7 runs with the following changes on the bike on Saturday:
I went 6" over stock only with the swing arm, this seems to be the happy spot. Still running Shinko Hookup. Fitted an auto tuner and set up per gear AFR as follow...1st gear AFR of 13,2 - 2nd gear 13,1 - 3rd gear 13,0- 4th gear 12,9 - 5th and 6th gear 12,8 (Bike cross the line end of 5th with the 16/45 gearing. With full kit I was 220lbs. All runs was with pump gas. We used home made track-bite that actually worked very well. ET improved to 9,7. Times captured: Run Reaction time 60ft quarter mile ET Top Speed mph 1) Not Captured 1,804 9,877 144,4 2) 0,208 1,717 9,870 145 3) 0,468 1,687 9,724 143,7 4) 0,192 1,644 9,911 143,1 5) 0,201 1,682 9,724 144 6) 0,423 1,641 9,932 143,2 7) 0,295 1,586 9,807 144,7 Run 7 was a wheelie happy launch so ET suffered from that. The good I took home with me after this is that the bike was more 'readable', with that I can work towards something. Funny that my best mph's was also my worse 60ft and ET. As is I am sure i should be able to get my ET down to 9,5...but to drop it another 0,725 to just break below the 9's...so little, but so much...not so easy

Frederick, glad to hear that you are moving in the right direction. Just keep working at it, I think that you can get your 60's down in the 1.5s consistently and you could drop the ET some more. 8.99 is still a long way away though.

Hi Steve, agreed...not only is the 8.99 a long way away, but in my mind to be honest - not realistic for the bike as is now. A friend who is a much lighter rider than me at 187 took the bike for a few runs, with the hopes that i could see my bike go below a 9.5 at least, but after a few runs the best he could get from it was a 9.562.
On his stock W/Base BMW1000 I ran a 9,6 with my first try. Such a disappointment to get those numbers from a stock wb bike, and only a best of 9,7 on my ZX14 that i have blown so much cash on. Well, I'm heavy, the ZX14 is heavy...so between me and the ZX we will have to do some weight reduction
...no idea what else could be done that will not cost an arm and a leg again, but all in good time |

Frederick, As a physically larger rider, it's going to be tougher for you to ET well. The first thing I would suggest is going here reading/watching some vids: https://blog.brocksperformance.com/faq/what-launch-technique-does-brock-teach-to-rookie-drag-racers/ Next: do you have any idea what the density altitude was at your track during your runs? From the looks of your time tickets, you must be running at high altitude. Let me know, Brock

so i've cut my seat to get a lower SOG and get myself lower and below the drag and I went from a 9.7 ET to a 9.4
Can't believe this improvement from getting out of the drag alone...amazing. 60ft times constant 1.6 ...hit 1.5 here and there. Now...to get a 9 flat.

..running 16/45 gearing and crossing the line red line top of 5th gear I was wondering, if I go with a 16/47 combination so that I can bring 6th gear into play, will the extra gear shift cost me ET or should the gearing improve ET?

Hi Brock, sorry I never replied on your question...no we are running at low altitude, we are at sea level here. My best ET of 9,4 was not my best 60ft, so I am convinced I can ET a 9,3 as is. So how do i cut another 0.3 seconds. 0,3 is nothing but at the same time its so much when it comes to ET's. I don't think its asking too much, its like asking for one cookie when you actually want six ![]() What did I do different: Cut seat, so I'm lower on the bike...and went up on tire pressure from 0,9 BAR (13Psi) to 1,1 BAR (15Psi) and that is it. I didnt want to, but the voices in my head say something about NOS...but that feels like defeat, I should get lower without going the NOS route.

Frederick,
You are a larger rider, so any attempt to get you lower will do wonders for preventing wheelies. As far as tire pressure - of course, a flat tire will slow you down! Run as much pressure as you can without spinning. if you really want to go quicker, you must pay attention to the details. Block off your mirrors instead of folding them back. That thing on your helmet is in a terrible location, removing it will allow you to go faster. I'm not sure about your traction level, but your video shows you are leaving quite soft. Watch my elbow during this launch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=359IGLoSuZM ET improvements happen in the first 330 ft, keep practicing in this area and your times will decrease. While Nitrous is an easy way to go faster, you really need to master your launch without it, or you will compound your current issues. Best of luck and let us know how you do, Brock

a few runs yesterday in preparation for regionals on 15 Dec, still can't cut below 9,4. Desperately looking to get MR12 before the 15th. No idea when stock will arrive or even if it will be here in time.

Frederick,
Do you have the ability to lengthen your wheelbase any longer?
1" can mean 1 tenth improvement in the 1/4 mile.... or more. Brock |

Hi Brock, yes i can still go longer on the wheelbase...I am running with your adjustable extensions. I am about 5-6" longer than stock now. The reason why i did not go longeris simply that I didn't want to start with traction problems again. I've read somewhere on here that traction becomes an issue if you go over 6 inches. Worth a try though, because the front do still come up a bit (you can see on one of the pics above). My original thought was that I should go a bit stiffer on the rear shock, but i can go to 7 or 8 inches and see what happens...

If you have to get out of the throttle then that will definitely be hurting your ET. I would go ahead and try and stretch it out a little more.

Feedback from last event of the season as promised:
I stretched the bike an extra one inch only...cautious not to stretch too much and then sit with traction issues. Changed to Motul 300V Racing oil, and Shinko hookup pro 200...no other changes on bike. Bike hooks perfect, no traction issues from the extra inch wheelbase. Not really down on my 60ft times but definitely more consistent. No improvements on ET but the weather on the day was fishing weather, not racing weather - very hot with a head wind, everyone ran less than normal. I was hoping to improve to a 9,3 at least but could not even get in my 9,4's today...but that was everyone's issue. My times: Reaction Time 60FT ET MPH - 1,629 9,532 146,7 - 1,600 9,606 146 0,226 1,614 9,520 146 0,327 1,637 9,559 145 0,350 1,651 9,597 145,7 0,296 1,641 9,614 146 2 months off before next season to dream up some sort of plan to get lower.

Consistent is good. Next is all about practice, practice, practice. You have to get that 60 foot time down, do that and your ETs will drop with it. With an extended bike like you have you will want to get them in the 1.5xs and eventually the 1.4xs. Good luck next season!
