Drain your fuel tank using the stock pump

You can completely drain the fuel tank (without an external pumping station or siphoning) by allowing the bike's stock fuel pump to drain the fuel into another container via a “drain line:”

1.       Ride the bike until the fuel level is at the lowest position. Usually if the fuel light is illuminated, this is a good starting point.

2.       Lift the fuel tank and prop with the stock prop-rod (if applicable.)

3.       Disconnect the stock fuel line from the pump exit (quick disconnect-push the tabs in and pull the line off of the nipple. Some fuel will spill.  We position a rag on top of the engine to catch it.  **CAUTION** if your bike is a 99-2000 Hayabusa: The fuel can spill completely and uncontrollably unless you stop the flow using the stock fuel caps located under your rear solo seat. They are positioned on the inner fender well near the prop rod location on small nipples designed to hold them for fuel tank removal. 

4.       Drain line; attach a 1/4 inch fuel hose/line etc. to the pump exit.  Note:  Any auto parts store will have this.  3 feet should be plenty.

5.       Run the other end of the drain line into an approved fuel container/gas can.


7.       Turn on the ignition. Be sure the bike is in neutral with the rocker switch in the ON position. You should hear the pump cycle and gas will flow into the can for approximately 4 seconds.  Then it will stop.

8.       Cycle the key repeatedly on and off until the tank is empty.  (It won’t take as long as you might expect!)

9.       Note:  To completely drain the tank, you will need to remove the prop rod to allow the tank to sit closer to horizontal (without pinching your drain line) and have a helper cycle the key while you hold the tank. This will allow the internal fuel pickup to drain as much fuel as possible.

10.   Remove your catch rag and drain line.

11.   Re-assemble the stock fuel line (be sure the quick disconnect tabs are properly positioned in the connector, and you hear a “click” as you install the line back onto the nipple) and tank hardware.

Note to ZX-14 owners...the above applies, but it is quite a bit of work to get to the pump exit.
